How to deal with abuse as a foster carer.

It is an unfortunate reality that some foster carers will have to deal with abuse towards them from the children in their care. A lot of children in care will have had damaging life experiences. This can manifest itself in behaviour that may put foster carers at risk. If abuse or neglect is all that child has known growing up, they are likely to find it an appropriate response to difficult situations.

Abuse can take on many forms. It could be verbal abuse, physical abuse or emotional abuse. Once an abusive pattern of behaviour has established itself, it is very difficult to repair the relationship. It is advisable to reach out immediately to the foster agency you represent. They will likely then move the child on to a specialist home, which is more set up to deal with complex cases.
