What are the differences between independent fostering agencies and the local authority?

The local authorities and the government are the biggest direct employer of foster carers. However, independent fostering agencies are taking on an increasingly prevalent role within the industry. Independent agencies are often more flexible.

They specialise in taking on groups of children with more specific and complex needs. Local authorities will work in conjunction with independent agencies to find the best solution for each child.

Whilst rates of pay fluctuate between individual agencies and councils, you are more likely to get a more generous salary when fostering through an agency. However, they will often demand higher levels of skill and experience in return.
