How to manage fussy eaters.

It is not uncommon for foster children to have issues around food. Children from a background of abuse will have had disrupted meal-times and they might not have encountered certain foods before. Anxiety at being separated from their birth family will also impact on their appetite.

As a foster parent you need to ensure that the children in your care develop healthy attitudes towards food and have a balanced diet.

Some foster children may resist eating certain foods, or will not eat regularly, because it is learned behaviour. Some children may not yet feel comfortable using cutlery. It is important to be patient in this process and to not expect quick results. Do not let it manifest into an ongoing feud, this will only exacerbate the problem. Involving children in food shopping and preparation can help to engage them more with the process of healthy eating.
