How to help a foster child feel at home.

Entering a new home and family dynamic can be a daunting experience for foster children. It is important to be as welcoming as possible.

However, what is welcoming for one child may be deeply stressful to another. Each child is unique and it is important to be delicate in your initial interactions. This will give you time to gauge the individual needs of each child. Over time a bond and understanding will emerge. It is important to not force this and do not be discouraged if at first, they are distrustful.

From a more practical perspective there are several things you can do to be more prepared. Make sure the room is prepared and that the child has everything they will need. Such as:

•Fresh linens and towels.

•New clothes, if necessary.

•Toiletries

•Academic resources they may need for school.
