Reality of Foster Caring

An alarming number of people have misconceptions on the realities of being a foster carer.

Despite having commendable intentions too many romanticise the industry, ignorant of the potential hardships. A lot of the children in care come from traumatising backgrounds. This can leave them with emotional or mental health issues as well as behavioural problems.

Children in care may distrust their prospective carers, they might even resent them. This could lead to abusive or destructive behaviour.

As a prospective foster carer you must be prepared to deal with challenging children. Each child will demand your patience, attention and support. It is your responsibility to assess your own suitability before taking on such a formative role in another’s life.
