Dealing with early childhood trauma.

Many children will arrive in care having suffered abuse or neglect. For young children trauma can have a formative effect on their psychological well-being.

Their prior experiences will have established behavioural patterns. Traumatised children need to be offered compassionate and patient care to aid their recovery. Each child is unique and will demand of you a different set of skills.

Should you find this challenging you can turn to your social workers for support and training in therapeutic parenting techniques. In foster care it is important to remember that you are part of a wider team and support will always be available.
