Inadequate levels of education in foster care leavers.

According to a 2014 study only 6% of care leavers were in further education, compared with 33% of all other nineteen-year-olds. Many care leavers are being cut adrift by their care providers at eighteen and this makes it extremely difficult for them to adapt to adult life.

The government launched their Care Leaver Strategy in 2013 which was designed to obligate local authorities to support care leavers up until they are twenty-one. However, the chair of the Commons Select Committee recently described “systematic failings” in the system.

The amount of support offered by local authorities varies wildly. Although the government’s Care Leaver Strategy is a step in the right direction more must be done to support care leavers who wish to pursue further education.
