Are you eligible to become a foster carer?

There is a national shortage of foster carers. Foster care can be a rewarding career where you can leave a positive impression upon the world. However, it is not without its challenges. It can take extreme love and patience to give vulnerable children the care they need.

Anyone can apply to become a foster carer. After you have applied your suitability will be independently assessed. This process can be invasive and could take anywhere up to six months.

The council or agency you applied to will perform a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check on you and anybody over eighteen in your household. You will also need a medical check to ascertain your physical suitability for the role.

Afterwards, it is compulsory to attend a group preparation session before your application is sent to an independent fostering panel who will make the final decision on your appropriateness.
